Yes, technically, but not the way it sounds. You end up with a WhatsApp Business Account, sitting inside your own free Meta Business Manager, and a guided signup flow creates both for you in a few clicks. You never touch a developer console, write a line of code, or manage any of Meta's infrastructure. A tool like FiveNudge handles the actual API integration, and your existing WhatsApp Business app keeps working, on the same number, the whole time.
The word "API" scares off a lot of shop owners who would otherwise automate this in an afternoon. It sounds like something you need an engineer for. Almost none of that fear survives contact with what actually happens during signup.
Three things called "WhatsApp" that are not the same product
Most of the confusion starts here, because Meta genuinely offers three different things under one name.
Regular WhatsApp
The app on your personal phone. Not relevant to any of this.
WhatsApp Business App
Free, and what most small businesses already use. It runs on one main phone plus up to four linked devices, and broadcast lists top out at 256 saved contacts. There is no automation and no API access. Perfectly fine for a shop answering chats by hand, structurally incapable of sending an automatic review request the moment a bill is paid.
WhatsApp Business Platform, usually just called "the API"
This is what people mean when they say "WhatsApp Business API." It is hosted entirely by Meta, built for automation, templated messages and integrations, and it is what a tool like FiveNudge actually connects to on your behalf.
What "having an API account" actually requires from you
Two things, both free, both created in a guided flow rather than a technical setup:
- A Meta Business Manager. The same free business account that also runs Facebook and Instagram ads for millions of businesses. If you have ever boosted a post, you may already have one.
- A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), linked to your number, sitting inside that Business Manager. This is created through what Meta calls Embedded Signup: a short, guided flow inside the tool you are signing up with, not a separate developer registration.
The account belongs to you, not to FiveNudge or any other tool. What you grant the tool is permission to send messages through it on your behalf, the same way you might give an accountant access to your GST portal without handing over the business itself.
Do you lose your number or your existing chats?
No, and this used to be the real deal-breaker before Meta fixed it. A feature called Coexistence, rolled out in May 2025, lets the WhatsApp Business App and the Business Platform run on the exact same number at the same time. Every message, contact and chat history stays intact, mirrored between both sides in real time.
You can still reply to a customer by hand from your phone while the automated review request goes out through the API in the background, on the same number, in the same chat thread the customer already has saved.
Coexistence needs the WhatsApp Business App opened at least once every 14 days to stay connected, and caps automated throughput at 20 messages a second. Neither matters to a single restaurant, salon or clinic sending a few dozen review requests a day, but it is the kind of detail that explains why this took Meta a while to get right.
What actually costs money, and who pays it
Messages you type and send by hand from the Business App stay free, exactly as before. Only the automated messages sent through the API, like a review request template, fall under Meta's own conversation-based pricing. Anything outside an active 24-hour customer conversation has to use a pre-approved message template rather than free-form text, which is also why review-request tools ask you to approve your wording once rather than letting it change on the fly.
In practice, this cost is small, predictable, and the kind of thing worth folding into one flat bill rather than tracking separately. FiveNudge's own ₹499/month already includes it, so there is no separate Meta invoice to reconcile every month.
What this means if you run a shop, clinic or salon
- You will never personally open Meta's developer console or write any code.
- Setup is a guided signup that takes minutes, done once, not an ongoing technical responsibility.
- Your existing number and chat history stay exactly as they are, thanks to Coexistence.
- The account is yours. The tool you choose is a guest with permission, not the owner.
We handle the Meta setup. You just approve your message once.
FiveNudge walks you through the guided WhatsApp signup in about two minutes, keeps your existing number and chats intact, and folds the Meta messaging cost straight into your plan.
